Last week I wrote a question to the social networking group, Linked In. The question asked for people to ponder that if today was their last day on Earth, to name one lesson they have learned that they would like to pass along. Of course, me being who I am, I had to give a couple of examples of lessons I have learned including that the longer I live the more I realize how I am not as unique as I often wished.
A dear friend from the Netherlands responded to my question this way:
“Your question and comment below about uniqueness makes me think of a scene from Monty Python’s “The life of Brian”, where all of Brian’s followers are addressed by Brian’s mother “You are all unique” she says to the crowd, and it replies “We are all unique!!”, and one person softly says “I’m not…” I think uniqueness is somewhat like equality in a communist regime: everybody is equal, but some are more equal than others…”
I love this reminder to laugh at my seriousness of thinking that I have it all figured out. It’s much more fun to pull up this scene from the Life of Brian and see myself as an earnest little British man dressed in a beige sack cloth dress with a smaller beige sack cloth tied to my head trying to admit that I am not unique and in doing so, showing that I am.
What do you bring to the dance that no one else has brought?
