When I was in elementary school I learned the usual sports such as Four Square and Softball. I remember our P.E. Coach always telling us “to keep our eye on the ball”. The issue for me was that I did not have the eye-hand coordination to negotiate where the ball was heading and when to connect with it. Instead, after several miscalculations and bruising my nose and neck, I began ducking. At first the ducking was as subtle as a ducking could be, a slight away movement of my body, but with time my ducking became more pronounced and obvious. I soon became “that” girl who was the last to be selected for any team. Who wants a ducker?

For some time now, I’ve been wrestling, exploring, surrendering and accepting what it is that I want to do for work with what shows up at my doorstep. Every Monday morning, three coaches from across the U.S. and I explore various book subjects and discuss how to apply them to our lives. Currently we are in the middle of “Return to Love” by Marianne Williamson. The section we focused on today was “Work” which has turned out to be a perfect response for my fear that unless I try to control every little piece of having the business or career of my dreams, then I won’t get to have it.

The big buzz film this year isn’t “Babel” isn’t “The Departed” and not even “The Queen”, the big buzz film isn’t even in the movie theaters, in fact it was introduced to the world on the internet. The film I’m talking about is, of course, “The Secret” which you can find at www.thesecret.tv. I’ve certainly had a process digesting the suggestions from The Secret and as a result another Coach and I will be offering a retreat the weekend of April 27-29 called, “Beyond the Secret” to share what we’ve learned. What we have realized is although there were many messages in the film that were excellent and reinforced our understanding of how the world works they only skimmed the top of the pot and did not delve into the ingredients of the recipe to creating the life we really want. I further understood that although it is wonderful to dream big and dance around with lofty ideas, at some point I have to get after the business of making my life happen. In other words, I need to figure out and delineate the steps to creating the stairs so that I can reach the stars of my dreams.

For awhile now I’ve been writing about the process of recognizing what I want to do with my life (figuring out my life’s calling), focusing on what I want (as opposed to what I don’t want) and growing up publicly (how can I keep food on the table while I pursue the work of my dreams). In between the black of the letters and the white of the spaces of my words has also been the process of my subconscious mind (letting go of limiting behavior) and learning how to surrender to what seems to be the reality of the moment (acceptance).
